Not quite. This experience is designed for adults with at least an A2 level in French. If you’re a complete beginner, you might find it frustrating, as you wouldn’t be able to fully enjoy the activities or conversations. The goal of this French immersion in Lille is to help lower-intermediate to intermediate learners unlock their spoken French in a natural way, with minimal use of English. Unless absolutely necessary, I speak French throughout the stay, that’s the whole point of immersion
Absolutely! Many French teachers join this type of program to brush up on their language, reconnect with French culture, and gain fresh insights into immersive teaching. It’s a chance to experience the learner’s perspective and enjoy authentic daily life in France
You’ll speak and hear French throughout the day, from morning to night. Between the private lessons, shared meals, cultural outings and casual conversations, you can expect to be immersed in French for around ten hours a day. I translate as little as possible, to preserve the authenticity of the experience. That said, the pace always adapts to your energy, confidence and comfort – this is a premium, human-centered program, not a boot camp
In the past, guests used to stay in our home, a spacious three-bedroom apartment I share with my wife in Lille. It was a fully immersive homestay experience, with a private room and shared daily life. Since the arrival of our baby, I now offer a slightly different setup, designed to give you even more comfort and privacy. You’ll stay at Villa Barbieux, a charming BnB just a few minutes’ walk from my home, while we spend most of the day together in French through lessons, meals, and activities. This is not a hotel-style language course, but a real immersion in everyday French life. You’ll experience the language from the inside, while enjoying your own personal space in the evening. I’m always nearby and available if you need anything, and you’ll still benefit from a close, human, and fully guided experience.
Yes. We spend most of the day together in French through lessons, meals, outings, and everyday conversations. Staying nearby at Villa Barbieux simply gives you more comfort and privacy in the evening, while keeping the immersion strong and natural throughout the day.
There’s no long checklist. I’ll provide a welcome pack that includes a personalized notebook, pencils, and books about Lille and the region. Just bring your usual travel essentials, your curiosity, your energy, and your joy for learning. Comfortable shoes are always a good idea, and if you’re coming from outside Europe, don’t forget a power adapter, otherwise, everything you need is here
Yes, you can but it’s important to know that coming with someone else changes the nature of the immersion. If your partner doesn’t speak French, the experience will be less linguistically intensive, since French won’t be the only language spoken. Your companion can join the meals and outings, and there’s an extra fee depending on whether they take lessons or not. I recommend coming solo for maximum impact, unless your companion has a similar level of French and the same immersion goals
Yes, absolutely. Most guests arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and take the high-speed train directly to Lille, which takes just about an hour. I’ll meet you at the station and take you back to the apartment to begin your stay. Like any city, Lille has areas where it’s best to stay alert and take basic precautions, especially for pickpockets, but overall it’s a welcoming and walkable city. I’ve lived here for seven years and have never felt unsafe
Seth’s experience during his French immersion in Lille
My recent immersion with Jerome was just superb. Jerome is one of the most intelligent, inquisitive, knowledgeable and amusing people I know.
We spent hours together going through historical sites (which are a great interest of mine) and his knowledge of the area, combined with a deep understanding of 19th and 20th century history was just a treat. Using French to learn something you love makes learning so much easier, not to mention just more fun.
Jerome is patient (way more than me) and would gently correct mistakes that I was making repeatedly and explaining a better approach. My fluency during this week improved so much even I could tell the difference. If college were this much fun, no one would ever leave campus. Highly, highly recommended. He’s the best.
